When writing a Cover Letter, you should follow the same rules used when writing your CV/Resume. The number one reason an employer will turn down an applicant before the interview is due to way that the Cover Letter and CV/Resume are written. Cover Letters need to be precise, to the point, and professional, have your contact information written accurately, and illustrate why you fit the job you are applying for.
Like CV/Resumes, a Cover Letter should be adapted for each position. Nothing is worse than a hospitality employer reading why you want to work at "the most recognizable bank in the UK", especially if the business you are apply for is in the US!
