Katie's Disney Experience

During my time at Sheffield Hallam University, I had the opportunity to take a placement year. I was successful in being selected by Yummy Jobs for the year-long Disney Academic Exchange Program in 2012. My year placement with the Walt Disney World Resort was split into three jobs roles; Front Desk, Attractions and Operations, Quick Service Food and Beverage.

For my first six months, I worked as a front desk cashier at Disney’s 'All-Star Resort', which is one of the largest and busiest resorts on Disney property. My position involved meeting and greeting hotel guests, checking guests in and out of the resort and general customer service. the great thing about this position was that every day I was learning something new!

I then spent three months working in the Boneyard at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. I was constantly developing my customer service skills by interacting with guests on a daily basis. I really enjoyed working with other cast members from all over the world and understanding their cultures.

During my final three months on the Academic Exchange Program, I worked at 'Restaurantosaurus' at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. I was fully trained in all aspects of the health and safety procedures within the kitchen environment and how to prepare and cook food to order.

As part of the Academic Exchange Program, I was enrolled with Central Michigan University.took part in online classes and attended a series of Disney taught classes. My most enjoyable class was marketing, which allowed me to gain a greater understanding of how Disney advertises to its target market. All these classes provided me with the opportunity to network with Disney leaders from across the company.

On my days off I would explore the parks, go shopping in the malls and chill by the pool with my friends. I also had the opportunity to travel during my program; I visited New York, Miami, Canada and Atlanta!

This experience was life-changing; it enhanced my independence, organisation and interpersonal skills and provided me with the chance to learn from one of the world’s leading companies in customer care and satisfaction. I have made lifelong friends and I would recommend anyone to take part in a Disney International Program!
