Rosie's Culinary Adventure with Loews Hotels
My Internship at Loews Portofino Bay Hotel in Orlando, Florida was a fantastic opportunity that developed my communication skills and confidence as a person and as a professional.
It was a challenge to integrate and contribute to an environment which I was unfamiliar with and to communicate effectively as part of a large team, but the support I was given from my co-workers – their welcoming attitude, help, advice and friendship helped me greatly to learn and thrive. I quickly became increasingly confident and started to really learn about my surroundings. The rewards which came with this in improving my work and being recognised by the other chefs motivated me even more to grow and achieve. A highlight of my placement was working alongside the senior chefs on a VIP kitchen show event in one of the grand ballrooms.
These skills have also been incredibly beneficial to me on my return to the United Kingdom. The confidence and communication skills I gained have enabled me to be brave and apply for things that previously I would have convinced myself not to out of fear!
Since returning from my placement I have been able to submit and be accepted for conference paper presentation, getting to the finals of Nestle Professional Toque d’Or. Based on my placement at Loews Portofino Bay Hotel, I have also been named the Council for Hospitality Management Education (CHME) Young Gun 2017, which is an absolute huge honour.
Overall, my placement has really kick-started what will hopefully be an exciting career in hospitality, and more importantly, I have memories of the experience which I will never forget. More than anything, I had a fantastic time and made friends from all over the world, with whom I will always be in touch.
