Biltmore - Rooms Division & Culinary Programs

Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, NC, the Biltmore Estate welcomes over 1 million guests each year. The 8,000 acre estate includes the Biltmore House and gardens (America’s largest privately owned home), an award-winning winery, a 4-Star 4-Diamond Inn, a family-friendly Hotel, exceptional dining, outdoor activities, and much more!

Participants in the Biltmore Internship programs get the opportunity to sharpen their culinary, hospitality, and guest relation skills at America’s largest home! Biltmore’s training programs give participants a chance to challenge themselves and develop their skills in many different cuisines and settings.The Biltmore Estate is home to 6 full-service restaurants whose menus feature fresh produce and meats from the estate itself, as well as wines from the award-winning winery. Many of the restaurants are “green certified” and have an extensive sustainability program including canola production, solar energy and various field to table production/agricultural programs.

 

Eligibility Requirements for J-1 Interns

In order to qualify for this particular designation of the J-1 visa you must be:

  • Must be a foreign national who is currently enrolled full-time and pursuing studies in Tourism, Hospitality or Events at a degree or certificate granting post-secondary academic institution outside the United States

or

  • Graduated from such an institution no more than 12 months prior to your exchange visitor program start date
  • All participants must possess sufficient proficiency in English to participate on the program

Eligibility Requirements for J-1 Trainees

In order to qualify for this particular designation of the J-1 visa you must be:

  • A foreign national who has either a degree or professional certificate from a foreign post-secondary academic institution and at least one year of prior related work experience in Hospitality, Tourism or Events This experience must have been acquired outside of the United States

or

  • Five years of work experience in the Hospitality field acquired outside the United States
  • All participants must posess sufficient proficiency in English to participate on the program

Culinary

As a Biltmore Culinary Intern, you’ll be exposed to Biltmore’s professional kitchens and will be rotated (every 2 months) throughout the diverse restaurants on property to gain optimum training. Interns will work in all areas of the kitchen environment specific to their degree program and will be mentored by each location’s chefs and Food & Beverage management teams. Knowledge and experience will be gained in areas such as knife skills; a la carte service; buffet and banquet service; high volume service, plate design and presentation; inventory and ordering, recipes and menu design, staff documentation and scheduling, and other culinary operational skills.

Rooms Division

As a Biltmore Rooms Division intern, you’ll be exposed to Biltmore’s luxurious and award-winning hotels, and will be rotated (every 2-3 months) throughout the diverse accommodations on property in able to gain optimum training. Interns will train in all areas of the hotel rooms division environment and will be mentored by each location’s hotel management team. Knowledge and experience in Lodging will be gained in areas such front desk, PBX communications, valet dispatch, bell services, night auditing, Rev/PAR management and other areas of interest in the luxurious and world renowned Inn on Biltmore Estate or Village Hotel on Biltmore Estate.  The Inn is continually one of Conde Naste top 100 hotels, and the new Village Hotel opened in December of 2015.

Compensation: J-1 interns are paid on a weekly basis and are guaranteed full time (35+) hours each week. Schedules will vary throughout a 7-day workweek. Rate of pay will be offered at $12 USD/hour, with a $500 USD stipend for Culinary candidates available at the end of a successful contract.  All Interns also enjoy a generous employee discount, shift meals, 2 complimentary Biltmore Estate admission tickets, and many other perks! Uniforms are provided.

Housing and Transportation:  Student housing is available ($100 paid via weekly payroll deductions) including complete furnishings, utilities, outdoor pool, cable/wifi, fitness center, laundry facilities and other amenities.  Apartments are shared with 2 other students in the internship program.  Housekeeping services are available at an additional weekly cost of $25 USD.

Daily transportation to and from the student housing and training locations is available for a weekly cost of $10.00 USD.  This transportation will be via a company van and driver service that work on a set schedule that will be provided during student orientation.  Biltmore will also provide transportation upon arrival from Asheville/Hendersonville Airport and upon return flight.
